Nominations continue to roll in for our Person of the Week, the News & Star feature which each week shines a spotlight on someone who has achieved something special.

That might be a milestone in their career, selfless service to the community, or recognition for a simply amazing person who you think deserves applause.

New volunteers at the Carlisle Covid-19 Community Help Group emergency food hub - Alice McCone, Maureen Wilson, Beth Fernaux, Eileen Miller, Sammie Behan, Freya Laverick and Liz Wannop - have been nominated for their hard work.

A spokesman for the group said: “As lockdown measures are eased, and we begin to look ahead to the ‘new normal’, some of our team of volunteers have returned to work or have had to change their family commitments.

“The work of the food hub is no less busy, and we have been training up some new volunteers to allow us to increase our capacity to respond to the needs of people across Carlisle.

“The volunteers have stepped forward to work in the food hub.

"Alice has proved invaluable in the admin team, and Maureen, Beth, Eileen, Sammie and Freya have been packing emergency and school lunch food parcels, helping to take deliveries from shops and local people, generally keeping the hub organized and fully functioning.

“This allows us to be open six days a week and to continue our work helping people across the city."

He continued: “Everyone just rolls their sleeves up and ‘mucks in’ as soon as they come through the door.

"It’s non-stop most days taking deliveries, sorting out the food safely, maintaining social distancing, packing up emergency parcels.

“We send out school lunch parcels to 280 children a week, and the speed at which volunteers put together parcels, carefully considering balanced packages suitable for each family is fantastic.

“At the end of the day we look at how much hard work has been done, and I remind myself that everyone is giving their time freely for no pay back at all, other than the satisfaction of helping others, and that is so heartwarming.

"There is a real good humour in the hub, and everyone is so friendly and cheerful.”
