Pupils have found themselves back in the classroom – and on the dearly-missed playground – following new government guidance.

Youngsters across the county made their way back through the school gates on Monday.

Under the updated guidance, children from nursery, reception, Year 1 and Year 6 are allowed to go back to school for their lessons.

And pupils of St James’ Infant School, Whitehaven, were among those getting back to traditional learning, with children heading back to school in ‘bubbles’.

The group enjoyed time out on the playground, learning about ‘mini beasts’, and of course factoring in plenty of storytime.

The school’s headteacher, Michael Craig, was pleased with the school’s successful reopening.

“I am very proud of my staff and the children for how well they have been able to adapt to what school is like during these unprecedented times,” he said.

“We will continue to assess the risks and follow the guidance outlined by the government. The safety of our pupils and staff is absolutely paramount to us.”

Not all schools across the county decided to reopen their doors, as Sue Sanderson, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for schools and learning, said the final decision lies with individual schools.

Parents and carers also have the choice, and will not be penalised if they choose to keep their child at home.
