Police stopped more than 150 cars after people ventured out during lockdown.
Officers created a checkpoint in Workington to engage with the motorists and give advice about their journey.
A spokesman for the police said: “Officers from Allerdale neighbourhood policing team engaged with the occupants of more than 150 vehicles today in order to explain and encourage guidance from the Government about Covid-19.
“A road check was set up in Workington, with officers engaging with the public and providing guidance. We are pleased to report the vast majority of the public were complying with the guidelines.
“We also gave advice regarding social distancing and encouraged those who were not out for reasonable reasons to return home.”
