An automatic message alerting residents to an "emergency exercise" at Sellafield had been issued in error.
Subscribers to Sellafield's automated telephone warning system, designed to warn nearby residents in case of an emergency at the nuclear site, were given a message yesterday morning about an "emergency exercise".
However a spokesman for Sellafield said: "This message was issued in error and we apologise for any confusion or concern it may have caused.
"We routinely carry out training exercises to ensure our emergency response teams are prepared for a range of scenarios."
