Engineers responsible for maintaining Cumbria’s power grid are preparing for the next named storm on its way to the county.

Electricity North West engineers have been preparing in recent days for Storm Jorge, which first began to affect Cumbria yesterday.

Named by the Spanish weather services, Storm Jorge is set to bring winds of up to 75mph, which could cause damage to overhead power lines.

Sam Loukes, Incident Manager at Electricity North West, said: “We have experienced an extremely busy February so far.

“We have extra engineers and standby staff available over the weekend and we are continuing to monitor the weather daily.

“During Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis our increased flood defences ensured that a number of key operational assets remained unaffected.”
