Cumbria could be hit by yet more floods this weekend - though the county looks set to escape the worst of the weather.

Heavy rain and strong winds are heading for the UK in the coming days, however the Met Office is predicting that the heaviest rain will miss Cumbria.

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued today for rain extending across west and south west Scotland, however it stops short of reaching Cumbria.

Another yellow weather warning for rain extends across parts of north Yorkshire, but avoids extending into Cumbria.

There is however tomorrow a yellow weather warning for wind in place across Cumbria and the whole of the north of England - and Scotland.

Delays to buses and trains running in the county may come as a result of the high winds, which are predicted to die down by about 10pm tomorrow.

However despite the lack of weather warnings, prolonged heavy rain is predicted throughout today in the north of the county, with periods of lighter rain also predicted tomorrow.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “Additional rain is forecast during the second half of Friday into Saturday, with further widespread rain then likely across the region overnight Saturday and through Sunday morning.

“High ground in the west of the region is most likely to see the largest totals, though there is some uncertainty over the locations and volumes of forecast rain.”

The Environment Agency spokesman added that as the situation develops over the weekend, “additional alerts and warnings could be issued.”

Some flooding is also possible this weekend “due to current ground conditions and river levels”, the Environment Agency spokesman said, being raised further by the rain forecast to hit the county.

The agency will be keeping people updated throughout the weekend as the situation develops.
