A MAJOR Carlisle road will be closed in the evenings from tonight for road improvement works for 10 nights.

From 7pm, the stretch of London Road between Halfords and B&Q will be closed until 6am tomorrow.

This stretch of road will be closed between 7pm and 6am each weekday this week, and again each weekday next week.

The road will not be closed during the weekend.

A diversion will be in place to avoid the road closure, which will take motorists along Eastern Way and Warwick Road, and then either along Victoria Place and Lowther Street for northbound passengers or along Botchergate and round The Crescent for southbound passengers.

Today also sees the resumption of roadworks on Warwick Road, carried out by United Utilities.

The utility company is refurbishing one of the major pipes carrying Carlisle’s water supply.

This will mean a return of the temporary traffic light system which had previously plagued motorists for months before Christmas.
