An ambitious planning application that would increase the number of homes being built in Brampton has been granted permission.

In May last year Story Homes submitted an amendment to its application for a second phase of the Winchester Place development that would increase the number of houses being built from 63 to 78.

The impact this has on the overall development means that more than 100 houses will be built.

A spokesperson for Story Homes said: “We welcome this delegated decision by officers at Carlisle City Council to grant detailed planning permission for our amended proposals to build 78 new homes in the second phase of our Winchester Place development in Brampton.

“The amended plans will see the number of dwellings at the development increase from 63 to 78 units and will incorporate our new ‘Story Collection’ house type range.

“We are happy to continue working in Brampton and to now be able to deliver our new Story Collection house type range from Winchester Place.”

Concerns have previously been raised by residents and the parish council about the impact such a vast development will have on local infrastructure.

As part of the approved plans, Story Homes will pay more than £440,000 to fund additional places at William Howard School.

They will pay Carlisle City Council more than £165,000 to go towards the development and maintenance of a play area. They will also look to develop sustainable travel arrangements.

However, there are concerns that this just won’t be enough for a town that is already struggling to deal with the population.

David Moorat, chairman of Brampton Parish Council, said: “The view the parish council has and will have, is that they are not supportive of this increase in the number of houses for several reasons.

“Although there is some funding going to the extra school places, this is too much development in Brampton without developing other parts of the infrastructure.”
