The body of a woman has been recovered from the Solway Firth, with her death being treated as "unexplained".
It is understood the body was discovered yesterday evening just north of the English-Scottish border, in the Solway Firth near Cummertrees, west of Annan.
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said this morning: "Police Scotland can confirm that the body of a woman has been found within the Solway Firth, near to Cummertrees, Annan, on Saturday, 11 January.
"The death is being treated as unexplained and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
It is not understood at this point how the woman came to be in the Solway Firth yesterday.
As the authority who led the operation to recover the body, it will be the responsibility of Police Scotland to formally identify the body.
A spoesman for Cumbria Police said: “Cumbria Police are aware that a body was recovered from the Solway Firth yesterday.
"Formal identification of the deceased has yet to be confirmed and this case remains a Police Scotland investigation.”
