A GRANT to be used for installing new CCTV cameras has been made available in Brampton.

The parish council received approval for the grant in December but is undecided about whether to accept it.

It makes available funding of up to £3,000 to be put towards the cameras but the council is wary about the added costs that come with closed-circuit TV.

Parish council clerk Alison Riddell told a meeting of the council: “I still don’t know how much we have to put to the camera itself, which could be up to £9,000.”

One of the main concerns is the cost of actually monitoring the camera.

Members resolved to find out more information about CCTV so they could follow up the issue in the new year.

Their findings will then be reported back in the January meeting.

“We don’t have to accept it if we think it is going to be too big of a financial burden but I think given one or two things it might be something we look at closely in relation to CCTV footage,” said councillor Carol Bell, who was standing in for David Moorat, chairman of the council.

There were three cameras in Brampton, operated by Carlisle City Council, but these are no longer in operation.

Cumbria Police currently monitors CCTV.
