People often welcome a lie-in on a Sunday morning, but one Brampton man instead found himself fighting a fire this weekend.

A spokesman for Carlisle east fire station explained that a crew from the station were called to reports of a property fire in Brampton, at about 6.45 yesterday morning.

"Fortunately the occupant was woken by his smoke alarms and managed to extinguish the fire," the spokesman said.

"On arrival, crews cut away the areas affected by the fire to make sure there was no hidden fire spread."

Firefighters from Carlisle east fire station, as well as from all other fire stations throughout the county, urge everyone to make sure they have working smoke alarms in their homes.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Every home in Cumbria is eligible to apply for a free home safety visit to help them deal with any potential fire hazards in their homes.

"We can help you design a fire plan so that you and your family will know how to react if you have a fire.

"We will also fit, where applicable, a battery powered smoke detector free of charge."
