Northbound lanes on the M6 between Carlisle and Gretna are closed because of an overturned HGV.

The motorway is closed between junction 44, Carlisle north and junction 45, Gretna Green with diversionary routes in place.

Traffic is said to be at a standstill with queues of nearly two miles between junction 43, Carlisle central and junction 44.

Cumbria police are on scene along with Highways England traffic officers.

Highways England has provided the following details for diversion:

Traffic is diverting via the Solid Black Circle diversion symbol:

  • Exit the M6 northbound at J44
  • At the roundabout, take the third exit onto the A7
  • Continue on the A7 through Longtown, to the junction with the A6071
  • At the junction, turn left onto the A6071
  • Continue to the junction with the M6/A74M
  • At the junction, turn right and join the A74M‬
