Christmas cheer will come to Brampton on Sunday as the town gears up to switch on the Christmas lights.

It’s an event that brings together the entire town, and even those from afar, to embrace the festive spirit in the picturesque streets.

One lucky child has been chosen to have the honour of flicking the switch at 5pm and lighting the town up with a twinkling sparkle.

David Moorat, chairman of Brampton Parish Council, said: “This year, as usual, we’re not going to have a VIP, a footballer or a film star, we’re going to have our own VIP and that will be one of the children from Brampton.

“This is an important celebration for the town, the majority of people give it the thumbs up and say ‘it’s a wonderful experience, please don’t stop it.’”

Camels will carry young children as part of the Christmas parade up to the market place which is where the main celebrations will take place.

The Shoulder of Mutton will also open its doors for free mulled wine and there will be food and other refreshments available by the Moot Hall.

There will be an afternoon of fun for the entire family starting from 3pm on Sunday.

The Christmas festivities will continue in Carlisle from November 30 when the Christmas markets return to the city centre with food and gifts.

Paul Walker, destination manager at Carlisle City Council, said: “The event will be made up of traders from around Cumbria and the Borderlands region and will include food, drink and other festive gifts.”

It will run for a week until December 8.
