A CONTROVERSIAL planning application to build Carlisle’s second Lidl supermarket has been submitted to the city council. Our readers had their say on the News & Star website and Facebook page.
Third class quality supermarket! Why not to bring new supermarket Waitrose or M&S?
Kenneth Burt
Nothing wrong with Lidl, there’s a decent fresh bakery, especially in the mornings and it’s well priced. Which is more than you can say for the likes M&S and Waitrose.
Jack Mallam
On a flood plain. Great idea. You can’t pave over a space that always floods first and contains a lot of water. Good luck to the residents on lower Warwick Road next time it rains.
Christine Nicholls
Why not have a Booths supermarket (head office in Preston) my no.1 favourite, nearest store in Windermere, I’m sure there could be a new one in Carlisle?
David Fowler
Building a Lidl here would have a huge impact on everybody not just local people it would cause more traffic problems on Warwick Road and it will be built on a floodplain the water from the car park and building will add to the water in the stream what is pumped over the flood bank or the other river. Not a suitable site I would say.
Brian Studholme
Great idea another tin shed just what our historic city needs. The point is Lidl think it is a suitable site. They will argue that the area flooded before and so anything they do will only have a minimal impact. Tesco and Lakeland Gate along with several homes have been allowed on the flood plain. This sets a precedent that again Lidl will use to their advantage.
Lidl have said that 70% of those who responded to their questionnaire are in favour.
All I ask is if those in favour are prepared to say where they live and what impact the development would have on their day to day lives.
Ron Maddison
Great won’t have to travel to the other side of town. Bet Tesco don’t want it.
Lesley Jackson
Never mind Tesco have a thought about all the people have had their houses flooded twice.
Dot Wilde
All these armchair flood specialists that haven’t actually bothered to look at the application or the documents. By the time any flood waters have reached the site, the defences will already have been breached and the whole area would be flooded.
Nath Dixon
Council need to take a visit to Doncaster please.
James Ruddick
TESCO bosses say their Carlisle city centre store will reopen as soon as the area surrounding it is made safe.
Thank goodness for that, I heard a rumour on the bus it wasn’t going to. I can honestly say the biggest inconvenience of the Viaduct being shut is not being able to shop at Tesco as I am not able to drive. I am having to buy extra stock in when I do an online shop to compensate for not being able to do ad-hoc shopping at Tesco in town when we run out. Apart from the difficulties getting into town at all from Denton Holme, especially at night, reachable by dark, secluded areas, and the redirected bus routes. I would have been most disappointed if not livid if Tesco in the town wasn’t reopening!

Thank goodness. Tesco town is a big miss, especially for the older generation.
Anne Wright
Brilliant news, we have really missed it, as other stores are on the outskirts of Carlisle.
Particia Crook
Thank goodness! So many rumours were going around that Tesco was closing permanently!
Eileen Napier
We don’t realise until it happens what a miss Tesco in town is.
Etta David Cosgrove
Tesco is the only supermarket in the city centre for the people that don’t have a car. It sure a big miss.
Shirley Wood
Great we need Tesco back in town.
Pat Upex
I miss having my little daily shop in our little Tesco.
Linzi Davidson
The sooner the better! Not one decent general store for miles apart from Tesco.
Chloe Jones
There’s too many empty and unsafe buildings and shops they should of been made safe or reconditioned years ago. The minute there was a problem it should of been sorted. Not left unsafe to rot.
Cheryl Coffeemama Blaylock
Surely once it’s down at the level of the street the road and surrounding business will be able to open again?
Dale Hetherington
They should put a free bus on to the big Tesco for those who can’t get up there.
Lindsey Fraser
They are saying that now. Let’s see what they say in four months time
