BRAVE volunteers bared their soles to walk over hot coals and broken glass to raise money for a local animal charity.

They hot-footed over glowing embers and shards of glass for the event at Oak Tree Animals's Charity, based at Wetheral.

The annual event gives daring individuals the opportunity to learn to firewalk and walk over glass while raising money to help Oak Tree carry out its work to help animals in our region.

The charity, who receive no government funding have to come up with innovative ways to encourage people to fundraise so they can carry out their work.

Without the support of local people, donations and fundraising efforts, Oak Tree would struggle to provide care for animals in need.

Registration was £20 per person for one challenge or £30 for both with a minimum of £30 sponsorship. People could take on the challenge individually or in a team.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: "Thank you to everyone who took part and supported out fire and glass walk on Thursday evening.

"What a fantastic achievement - not only conquering the challenge itself, but all the fundraising you have collectively done to help animals in need.

"Thank you all so much - your amazing efforts really do make a difference and are both recognised and celebrated. Thanks also to the brilliant UK Firewalk team - you made a night to remember."
