The force is asking for the public's help in tracking the tree down, which was stolen from outside the popular fish and chip shop at some point between Sunday and Tuesday.
A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "Police are investigating the theft of a grey planter from outside the Shap Chippy.
"The planter contained a conifer tree.
"Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101, email 101@cumbria.police.uk, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting log 175 of the November 5."
