PART of the A66 is closed after a late-night crash near Keswick.

Highways England released details about the incident at 2.30am (Sunday), adding the road is closed eastbound between the junctions of the A591 near Keswick.

Emergency services have also been called to the scene.

No further details have been released as to how many vehicles are involved in the crash.

A diversion route is in place for drivers.

A spokesman from Highways England said: "Traffic approaching the closure near Keswick may exit the A66 and join the A591 northbound past Bassenthwaite towards Bothel.

"At Bothel, join the A595 northbound towards Thursby.

"Before Thursby, exit the A595 near Brackenthwaite and join the B5305 southbound towards Penrith via Rosley.

"Then join the M6 southbound at junction 41.

"Exit the M6 at junction 40, to then re-join the A66.

"Follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol."
