A NEW heritage and education centre at Carlisle Cathedral is taking shape after the main pavilion was put in place.

The new building - which is an extension to the Fratry - is on course to open at the end of this year.

The sandstone has also been chosen for the pavilion that will blend in with the existing stonework.

Ingrid Petit, from the architects Feilden Fowles, said: "The elevations of the new pavilion are inspired by the surrounding arches and by the refinement of the perpendicular Gothic tracery.

"Feilden Fowles Architects and Carlisle Cathedral chose a local red sandstone which would complement the colour of the stones used on the Fratry and Cathedral.

"The chosen stone is called Locharbriggs and is quarried on the outskirts of Dumfries."

When complete the building will have new spaces for art, music and cultural events. There will also be a new cafe.

Some of the funding for the project has come from the National Lottery Heritage Fund with the rest being generously donated by groups and The Friends of Carlisle Cathedral.

Craig Carruthers, head of visitor services at the cathedral, said: "Ninety-five per cent of the funding has happened which leaves us with just five per cent still to find.

"We've been thrilled with the response so far.

"The Carlisle Cathedral Development Trust is launching the final phase of its fundraising activity with a target of £178,000.

"One of the most significant heritage buildings in the city will be open to all. Improved interpretation of the cathedral and its stories will support a carefully shaped, varied and inclusive programme of activity.

"Our learning opportunities will grow and we will have new spaces for art, music and cultural events."

The Fratry was built in the 1500s as the Abbey refectory, and is home to the cathedral’s collection of 17th and 18th century books, all of which have been carefully boxed up and placed into storage.

The original Smirke doorway - which features ornate carvings - will be reverted back to its original position.

Project management for the Fratry project is provided by Frank Whittle Partnership. Carlisle firm Cubby Construction Ltd is the main contractor on the project.
