Shoppers inspired by the war on waste have handed back their plastic packaging to the supermarkets.

Celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has urged shoppers to return their unnecessary plastic packaging back to the supermarkets that they have bought them from.

On Friday evening, Carlisle resident Fiona Prior organised a hand-in event for people to drop off their plastic to Tesco’s Warwick Road store with a message about how the shop can improve its plastic habits along with the hashtag #ourplasticfeedback.

Fiona said: “We had an interesting time at Tesco Warwick Road.

“The deputy manager wanted to throw us out of the store, and we had to move to the car park.

“There was lots of interest from cars coming in and leaving the Tesco car park, with a thumbs up from those in support.”

The act follows on from the transmission of the BBC One TV show, Our Plastic Waste, which has aired on the channel during the last three weeks.

The small act of protest has became more prominent across the country within the last week, with people sharing their plastic feedback stories via Twitter.
