ALLERDALE councillors have rejected a plan for a new 8,000-capacity shared sports stadium in the town.
The decision at today's executive meeting was met with anger by representatives of the Workington Town rugby league and Workington Reds football clubs.
The council is instead asking its officers to come up with a smaller scale plan for a new stadium.
However, former leader Alan Smith - whose Labour administration came up with the plan, before losing control of the council in the May election - claimed that due to the timescale, it looks unlikely that Cumbria will be able to host matches from the 2021 RL World Cup. Rugby authorities have already said if the stadium isn't built, the county will not host the matches.
