A lifelong Workington Reds fan is calling on the people of Allerdale to join forces in a united show of support for the proposed new sports stadium tomorrow night.

Brian White has organised the ‘pop-up stadium’ event which will see backers of the Workington stadium march through the town to show the amount of support there is for the venture.

And he hopes that people will turn out in their hundreds to walk from the town centre Hub at 6pm to Workington Cricket Club where they will mark out a ‘stadium’ on the field.

Mr White came up with the idea for a non-political event to show support for the proposed stadium, ahead of Allerdale council’s executive committee discussing the proposals at the end of the month.

“It was something that came about in an effort to try and get some support for the scheme,” said Mr White.

“This is certainly not a protest we just want to get people to come together and show their support for it.

“It was my idea but I have ran it past some more Reds supporters and with the way the two clubs are now working together it has given me the opportunity to talk with some Town fans too.”

Mr White said he was a huge supporter of the proposed stadium, which would house both Workington Reds and Workington Town - and also host games in the 2021 RL World Cup.

He added: “Both clubs have battled against the odds for years now.

“They are both playing in out of date, dilapidated stadia with volunteers working really hard to keep the clubs going. They deserve a break.

“But to just mention the two clubs doesn’t give you half of the picture of what a new stadium can offer.

“Hopefully it will also relocate some highly paid jobs into the town centre which can only benefit the area. I think the benefit for the town centre shops will be great.

“I think it will benefit the entire area and, by that, I mean the whole of Allerdale.”

And he feels strongly that the stadium is needed for the youth of tomorrow to have sporting dreams to aspire to.

“When I was very young I used to look at Borough Park and want to go and play there,” he added.

“And I’m not so sure if children think that any more because the stadium is such a state. We want to inspire youngsters for the future.

“I know that this event is short notice but I felt there was a need to do something. I just hope people turn out in big numbers.”

The plans for the stadium have been up in the air after a shock election result in Allerdale which saw Labour lose control of the council.

The council originally revealed plans for the multi-million pound shared sports stadium back in October. It is due to be built on the site of the current football stadium at Borough Park.
