POPSTAR Lee Brennan is helping a popular Carlisle gym to organise its upcoming charity ball.

Barrie Scougal, who runs the Barrie Mark Fitness and Nutrition Centre, came up with the idea of the Fit and Fabulous Charity Ball in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

It is a cause close to both his heart and that of 911 star Lee, who was happy to help.

Barrie said: "Our charity for the foreseeable future is the Teenage Cancer Trust and this is our big fundraiser.

"Lee is a member of the gym and is arranging the entertainment for us.

"I've organised big events like this in the past but this is a first for the gym. It's open to everybody, not just members, and will be a fantastic night."

Barrie said he knows a local family who lost someone to cancer at a young age, which is one of the reasons he is keen to help the charity.

Lee - who travelled the world with boyband 911 0 - has himself battled cancer as a child, being diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma at the age of nine then again when it returned during his teens.

Barrie added: "Most people know Lee through his days as a nineties boyband 911 star but he suffered himself with cancer as a teenager before recovering and finding fame in the charts.

"We love the fact that Lee is taking charge of helping us organise our ball as it’s something close to his heart."

The event takes place on Saturday, June 1 at the Shepherds Inn, in Rosehill, Carlisle.

Tickets are priced £32.50 each, or £300 for a table of 10, and are selling fast.

The price includes a drinks reception, two-course meal and entertainment - including a DJ and live band.

There will also be a raffle and auction on the night with a host of top prizes, including overnight trips.

Barrie is a huge Liverpool football fan so is also organising a big screen to show the Champions League final, when his team play Tottenham.

Barrie said: "We have a really nice community feel in the gym and hold social events through the year, but this is our big fundraiser.

"It coincides with our spring games, which take place that same morning. It's a big sports day where we set out five challenges and members compete. Some take it seriously and some just have a laugh."
