A COMMUNITY is in shock after an 82-year-old man who was rescued from a massive blaze died from his injuries days later.

The man was airlifted to hospital on Wednesday afternoon after being pulled from his Egremont bungalow by firefighters.

He suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation and police yesterday confirmed he had died.

Neighbour Michael Sharkey has spoken of his shock following his friend's death.

He said: “I’ve known him for 60 to 70 years. As far as I’m concerned he was a good lad.”

Mr Sharkey attended the same school as the man, and their sons were friends and went to St Bridget’s Catholic Primary School together.

Egremont councillor, David Southward, said: “I would like to say on behalf of the community, our very best wishes to any family he may have locally and nationally.”

County councillor for Egremont, Chris Whiteside, said: “This is really terrible news, our thoughts and prayers are with this poor man and his family.

He added: “It’s a warning for all of us about fire prevention and safety.”

Detective Inspector Matt Scott said: “We are treating the fire as unexplained but not suspicious at this stage.

“We are working closely with Cumbria Fire and Rescue investigators to establish the cause of the fire.”

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze started in the kitchen of the Bridge End bungalow and the man was found in the living room.

Six fire engines attended the scene, battling the blaze for six hours.

Egremont fire station manager Phil Stannett said: “We don’t know the cause of the fire yet and it may take a couple of weeks to investigate.”

The Coroner has been informed and police are supporting his family.
