Friends of a 13-year-old girl who died in a crash near Carlisle have raised more than £2,000 in her memory, with more events still planned.

Ingrid Messenger, of Gaitsgill, was a popular pupil at Caldew School in Dalston.

She lost her life in a three-car collision outside the Crown Inn, near Ivegill, during February half term.

Her 15-year-old sister, who was injured in the crash, also attends Caldew School.

The tragedy was felt across the school, where many are still coming to terms with Ingrid’s sudden death.

To help, pupils have launched a series of fundraising events in her memory.

Ingrid’s funeral took place last Thursday, with a well-attended service at Raughton Head Church followed by a private cremation in Carlisle.

The following day, Caldew School held a ‘Wear a Headband Day’ for Ingrid - who always wore a pretty headband.

The whole school took part in the fundraising event.

“On Friday, in Ingrid’s honour, we were asked to wear a headband and the school did us proud. Students and staff donned their headbands with pride and raised a staggering £2,350,” said a spokeswoman.

“This week we turn our attention to our grand raffle and auction. All details are available on the Caldew School website. We would like to thank all parents and local businesses who have supported us.”

Ingrid was also a member of the school choir, who performed at the fundraiser - dedicating two pieces of music to their friend. Each member of the choir wore a yellow rose in her memory.

Businesses and residents have been donating prizes for the next fundraising events - a grand raffle and auction.

Tickets for the raffle can be purchased in school at £1 strip and it will be drawn next Thursday. Prizes include vouchers, hampers, tickets and Easter eggs.

Bids for auction items, which include Center Parcs passes, signed books and golf passes, can be submitted via the school website until midnight next Wednesday.

A total of six charities will benefit from the proceeds. They are the Beep Fund volunteer doctors, North West Ambulance Service, Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary, Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and the Great North Air Ambulance.

They have been nominated by Ingrid’s family.
