A flood alert has been issued for residents in the Carlisle area.

The alert, for the Lower River Eden, states that flooding is possible in the Carlisle, Crosby-on-Eden, Linstock and Rockliffe areas.

Issued at 3.20pm, the flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency as a result of high river levels at the agency's Linstock river gauge.

"High river levels are possible on the River Eden, River Caldew, River Petteril, Durranhill Beck, Brunstock Beck, Gosling Sike, Little Caldew, Parham Beck, Rockcliffe Beck and their tributaries," the flood alert states.

"We are closely monitoring the situation", the Envrionment Agency adds. "Our incident response staff are clearing debris screens.

"Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses.

"This message will be updated in eight hours, or as the situation changes."
