TESTS were carried out on Eden Bridges following Storm Gareth.

Cumbria County Council engineers used the BridgeCAT machinery to check on the structure as river levels remained high after heavy downpours.

The River Eden reached 4.07m at about 9pm last night, more than double what it was the 24 hours earlier.

The local authority said on Twitter: "It's important to carry out tests during periods when the river level is higher than usual - so that we understand the impact for future events and can plan accordingly."

Rickerby Park had to be closed due to flooding and the storm left debris scattered across the flood plain.

It was a sleepless night for many on Tuesday as strong winds, - up to 63mph - heavy downpours and thunder and lightning raged across the county.

Electricity North West engineers worked through the night to restore power to 4,200 homes across the north west.
