A ZOMBIE film starring disabled Carlisle teenager Olivia Story has now been released on DVD.

The 15-year-old, who lost both legs and an arm to meningitis as a toddler, and dad Mike Story both feature in the gory horror film Redcon-1.

The independent film was released in cinemas in September last year, with screenings at Carlisle's Vue cinema.

But it is so scary that it is rated 18 - meaning Olivia is too young to see it.

One scene featuring the amputee is particularly gory - seeing her get her limbs chopped off by the film's heroine.

But Olivia, who wants to become a professional actress, wasn't phased when the director approached her about removing her prosthetics for the scene. She said she was more than happy to use her disability to advantage, and help make a memorable film.

Both Olivia and dad Mike initially went along to play extras in the film.

They were over the moon when Olivia was given an additional part.

Redcon-1 was filmed back in 2016 and hit the shelves on DVD and Blue-Ray this week.

It is also available as a digital download.

The film is set in south east England, as a zombie apocalypse is spreading.

With only one hope of a cure, a team of Special Forces soldiers are sent on a mission to the city, now ruled by the undead.

Redcon-1 features Hollywood actor and producer Carlos Gallardo, from Desperado and Once Upon A Time In Mexico.

Other big names include Akira Koieyama, of Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist and The Last Samurai; Mark Strange, of Batman Begins, and former WWE wrestler Katarina Leigh Waters.

It is directed by Chee Keong Cheung.

Olivia and Mike had roles in the movie as both zombies and survivors.

Mike said: “I thought with Olivia’s arm she’d make an excellent zombie, so I'd look for a film she could be an extra in

"I got in touch with the production on Redcon-1 and they invited us down."

It turned out that Olivia would make her debut as a supporting artist on a film.

Despite being a triple amputee, it hasn't stopped her pursuing a career in the film industry. If anything it's encouraged her.

Olivia played an emotive part in one of the large battles of the film, in which she loses her limbs.

She said: “My favourite day was when I had my scene. I just thought it was amazing and made me really happy”.

Mike also had scenes, playing a military soldier and a zombie.

The Redcon-1 team took a unique approach to promoting the film, embarking on a successful cinema tour around the UK.

There were 70 screenings in total across 28 UK cities, including Carlisle.

Here the movie was played to a packed out audience, partly due to Mike and Olivia’s appearance in it.

Now those who missed it can watch it on DVD.

Mike and Olivia said they made lots of long term friends on set, who they still keep in touch with.

Olivia added: “I’d love to be an actress and just want to be in more films and do more acting.

"I’m not an unconfident person, but it helps.

"Doing Redcon-1 definitely inspired me. I just get such a buzz from acting and want to do it all the time."

The bonus features on the DVD and Blu-Ray include an interview with Mike and Olivia.

It is now on sale at HMV, Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, or via Amazon, iTunes and Sky Store.
