A BRAND new woodland is being created in Longtown today.

In partnership with Riverside Housing Association, Cumbria County Council has acquired a large number of young trees for the town.

When planted, the trees will create a new community woodland for the town.

More than 200 trees are being planted on the former Lochinvar School field, until 4pm today.

The council has arranged for local young people to help out with the tree planting.

The Longtown Kids Club will be present until 12pm to provide supervision for any younger children who might want to come along in the morning and help with the tree planting.

Riverside and the county council have organised the project in partnership with local community group Longtown Together.

Longtown Together’s mission statement is to bring members of the community together to work on projects which are beneficial to the whole area.

The land is owned by Arthuret parish council, who gave the county council permission to plant the trees on the former school field.
