A NEW Green Film Festival will be launched in Cockermouth next week.

Riversmeet and the Kirkgate Centre are running a bi monthly film programme with an environmental focus.

Following the films, people can enjoy a discussion over nibbles from Wild Zucchinis.

The initiative was launched following a £1,000 donation from an unnamed local person.

Cathy Newbery, of Riversmeet, said: "We have selected award-winning films that are thought provoking but also a good watch.

"The events are pay what you feel, enabling as many people from our communities to come along.

"We'd like to promote some debate afterwards while people can enjoy some delicious food provided by Wild Zucchinis.

"I think it's really important to get people together. Connecting like-minded people should provide a catalyst for more community action and learning."

Manon Plouffe, owner of Wild Zucchinis, is a member of Riversmeet and was keen to be involved.

"I think Riversmeet does amazing work and has been behind many environmentally friendly schemes in Cockermouth," said Manon.

"These films will address many issues around the planet that should concern us all. It's great to be showing them within our community and encouraging people to think more carefully about how we live."

The first film, The Sequel, will be shown at 7.30pm on Wednesday.
