MEMBERS of Aspatria town council are still appealing for witnesses after vandals went on a wrecking spree.

The damage to the railway station left the community devastated.

Work carried out by school children was destroyed, expensive equipment smashed and even a plaque recognising the children’s work was stolen.

Vandals attacked Aspatria railway station in early January which has been adopted by a small group of residents who worked tirelessly and was used as an example of why the town won the best small town in the Cumbria in Bloom Awards.

They also smashed the new ticket vending machine installed in an attempt to improve services.

Councillors in the town have since had a meeting to see if any information has come to light.

Aspatria mayor Barry Chambers, said: “We hoped that someone might have seen something, especially with people living so close to the railway.

“Everyone has been doing their bit to enhance the town.

“We won gold in the Cumbria in Bloom Awards, many residents and council members spent a lot of time, effort and money making this possible, but this could have a detrimental effect. We could be taking a step backwards not forwards.”

Mr Chambers has pleaded with anyone who has any information to report it. He would like to remind people that this can be done anonymously and that any information could help.

The council are working with the police and urged anyone with information to call 101.
