CARLISLE'S famous cracker packers were again used to make a stand for the rights of women, after their statue was given a makeover.
Cracker Packers was the name given to workers at the (then-named) Carr’s biscuit factory in Carlisle.
The bronze statue depicts two Carr’s factory women workers - one from past times and one from the modern day, dressed in their respective factory uniforms - standing on a Carrs water biscuit.
It is sited almost opposite the McVitie's biscuit factory in Caldewgate.
It was unveiled on International Women's Day last March and not only represents women workers but is also sculpted by a woman.
Yesterday it was used to make a further political stand however, as someone dressed the women in black t-shirts emblazoned with the words "Woman, noun, an adult female".
Hannah Bowman, 21, from near Morton in Carlisle, said: "It's a bit confusing but it's right.
"You're no different to a man, apart from a woman can have a child.
"It's good to have a normal definition of a woman, not putting her down in any sort of way. She is just a human female."
