Penrith and the Border MP Rory Stewart has suggested Theresa May's Brexit deal could yet win a Commons majority.

The prisons minister, who has been one of the Prime Minister's most prominent allies as she has battled to win support for her Draft Withdrawal Agreement, posted a tweet this morning urging fellow MPs to make up their mind and arrive at a decision.

He wrote: "What does parliament want? How many want no-deal? 80? 2nd referendum backers claim they have 150-180? That leaves about 400 MPs in favour of a Brexit deal. But half are yet to declare what they want in any credible detail. Enough of what most MPs are against. What are they for?"

After the PM defeated the vote of no confidence put forward to Jeremy Corbyn, Mr Stewart tweeted: "Parliament has agreed to back the government and the PM. Now we all need to work together to agree a smart, well-negotiated exit from the EU." Earlier, he drew a contrast between the government and Jeremy Corbyn, tweeting: "We as the government have at least been clear about what we propose in a detailed 500 page document. It is time for @jeremycorbyn to be as clear and as detailed about what he wants."

Labour have expressed an intention to stay in a customs union and within the single market, while the party has also said consideration should be given to the option a second referendum - something that the Liberal Democrats say is the best way to resolve the Brexit impasse.
