Roadworks on a major route in and out of West Cumbria are set to start again on Monday.

Highways England is working to create a dedicated right-turn lane on the A66 at the junction for Thornthwaite.

The £390,000 project began in October but work was suspended over the Christmas and New Year break.

The work is intended to improve safety at the junction by keeping traffic moving along the road and reducing the chances of collisions involving vehicles waiting to turn right into the village.

It is similar to a turning-lane recently installed for Braithwaite village a few hundred metres south.

Traffic lights will go back in place overnight on Sunday ahead of the work restarting on Monday.

The lights will be in used between 8.30am and 5pm daily, and the junction itself will be closed until the end of the work.

It is due to be completed in early February.

Before the work began, Highways England project manager William Paterson said: “Delivery of the scheme will involve some short term disruption but provide a long term benefit for road users turning right into Braithwaite and Thornthwaite”

The improvement is backed by Above Derwent Parish Council.
