POLICE are continuing to appeal for witnesses following a multi-vehicle crash on the A66.

It happened at Crackenthorpe, near Appleby, on Sunday at about 4.40pm and was the third crash on the busy trans-Pennine route in little over 24 hours.

The collision, which happened between the B6542 and the Bolton turn off, involved five vehicles and resulted in two people being taken to the Cumberland Infirmary with minor injuries. One, a 61-year-old from Scotland, was the driver of a Ford Focus. The other, a 42-year-old man from Maidstone, was driving a Peugeot.

The drivers of an Audi A3, a Mercedes and a Mazda were fortunately not injured.

Police closed from road for about two hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to contact PC 1373 Bage on 101, quoting log number 172 of December 30.
