A MAN who admitted an assault on his partner told the court he wants to change his ways.

Jason Clements, of Sybil Street, Carlisle, pleaded guilty when he appeared at the city's magistrates' court on Monday.

Prosecutor Carl Gaffney said the defendant and his partner were out drinking on December 22. There had been an "escalation in unpleasantness between the parties". At 1am they went home and the "toxic atmosphere" reached its threshold.

"He grabbed hold of her and kicked her to the leg a couple of times," said Mr Gaffney. "He says, 'I wanted her gone.'"

The court heard Clements had no relevant previous convictions and his partner did not want a restraining order.

Clements, who was not represented, said: "I went out drinking, made a stupid mistake and it has cost me a lot already." He told the judge he had sought help from Unity for his drinking issue and said he and his partner, who have a three-month-old baby, were working on their relationship.

District Judge Gerald Chalk said: "I'm going to treat you as a man of good character. You are aware of what makes this serious. It is a breach of trust. She is your partner and the mother of your child."

Judge Chalk said the offence was aggravated by alcohol and the use of his foot as weapon.

He was fined £120 and must pay £85 costs and £150 compensation.
