The owner of a luxury holiday lodge business near Carlisle is embracing a lifestyle trend originating from Scandinavia, since evolved by the Scots, and now being welcomed as a way of life for guests at her properties.

With the winter well underway, owner of the Tranquil Otter luxury lodges, Tazeem Abbas, is encouraging guests staying at one of her eight lodges to use their break as the perfect opportunity to enjoy some indulgent Coorie – otherwise known as the new Hygge (pronounced Hoo-gah).

For anyone who may not know, Coorie is the term given to the joyful art of snuggling and taking pleasure in warmth and cosy pursuits during the winter months. The simple appreciation of the finer things in life was used by the Scandinavians to boost their enthusiasm and energy ahead of the coldest nights of the year before being welcomed further afield.

Tazeem says: “Put simply, Coorie means to pull your shawl or coat tightly around you to protect you from the cold and windy winters, but the term has evolved to cover a wide variety of all things warm and cosy.

“More and more Scots - and Cumbrians - are embracing Hygge and Coorie as a source of inner warmth and contentment that comes from taking pleasure in ordinary, everyday things.

“From getting all wrapped up in your cosiest clothes and indulging in a session with your favourite comfort food, to getting close to nature by walking in the hills or enjoying a spot of wild swimming, Coorie can not only warm the body – but the heart and mind.”

Being only a short distance from the border with Scotland, The Tranquil Otter urges not only its guests, but hardy Cumbrian residents to take a few steps to embrace the art of Coorie and Hygge for themselves to improve their health and happiness.

Tazeem continued: “With so little light pollution in Cumbria and southern Scotland, stargazing is a great way to enrich your life - or try hibernating before a roaring log fire with a mug of steaming hot chocolate.

“From taking a long walk to snuggling up on the sofa with a blanket, Hygge and Coorie both embody everything that simply makes you smile.

“Get around to reading that book you bought a few months ago or start a new tradition with family or friends.

“Whatever you choose to linger over, adding a few fresh elements into your life will add to your wellbeing.”

So enthusiastic is the Tranquil Otter team, a Little Book of Hygge is left for every guest to enjoy with Tazeem’s further recommended reading including The Art of Coorie: How to Live Happy the Scottish Way.

So, whether you’re at home over the festive period or away for a well-earned break, escape the rat race for a few precious days in a cosy hideaway – whether it’s your own living room or in a peaceful winter retreat.
