Police have reopened the A686 at Penrith following a crash.

It was one of at least two collisions this morning on icy roads.

The road - which police said was treacherous due to black ice - was closed for several hours following the crash.

The one-vehicle accident happened at 8.40am at Edenhall.

The driver of the Peugeot 207 escaped without injury.

The road remains closed in both directions near the B6412 junction, just before the Civil Store at Roundthorn.

The other accident happened on icy roads near Keswick.

Police were called to the A591, heading towards Keswick near St John’s Church, at 5.30am.

Again just one vehicle - a Citroen - was involved.

Nobody was hurt.

A police spokesman said: "We’d urge people to drive with care, particularly at the moment when the temperatures are dropping so low and there is the potential for black ice."

On both, ice mentioned as a possible contributory factor.
