RESIDENTS in west Cumbria were evacuated from their homes following a gas leak.
They were asked to leave their properties shortly after 5am as a precaution.
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said an electric cable had set on fire and burned through a gas pipe in Cleator Moor.
Crews from Whitehaven and Egremont were called to Towerson Street and were made aware of a gas leak on arrival. They asked for the attendance of gas engineers.
Firefighters assisted Cumbria Police with the evacuation of nearby properties until the gas was isolated. Crews were in attendance for about two-and-a-half hours.
