A marathon city council meeting was so long that it gave one councillor time to get back from London to cast the deciding vote on the Sands Centre motion with a few minutes to spare.

The five-hour session prompted angry calls from some councillors to break off the proceedings and resume the following night.

The meeting continued late into the night, which gave James Bainbridge just enough time to make it back for his party’s motion on the Sands Centre – the final one on a packed agenda.

He was in London Euston at 5.45pm, an hour before Tuesday’s meeting started and he initially believed he had “no chance” of making it back to Carlisle in time.
