Six grassroots champions from across Cumbria have been named as winners in The Cumberland FA Community Awards.

Fred Gill, volunteer groundsman at Rickerby Park and club member at Crown Newlaithes, picked up the award for Outstanding Contribution to Community Football.

His citation said: "Since the floods hit during December, Fred has begun raising funds to ensure the pitches get back to what they were enabling thousands of kids per season to be able to play football."

The FA Volunteer of the Year is Trevor Bell of Aspatria Football Club.

Described as a “week in week out volunteer” who is passionate about investing in Yyouth players, Trevor takes on many jobs during game day from assisting injured players from both teams to coaching, to stopping behind and clearing the changing rooms afterwards.

The FA Young Volunteer of the Year is Theo Oghani of Unisun Athletic Juniors.

When the floods hit, despite Theo himself being flooded, he went out of his way to help the families from members of the Unisun team.

"For such a young man he is a an excellent grassroots volunteer."

The FA Charter Standard Community Club is Whitehaven AFC.

Whitehaven have seen significant growth in all areas of their club over the last few years, in particular their girls section which provides opportunities for girls of from Under 8’s through to Under 14’s.

The FA Charter Standard Development Club is Whitehaven Miners Social FC.

Whitehaven Miners have worked extremely hard at creating teams in the most difficult age groups to sustain. They have been involved in the Under 18’s and Under 21’s leagues since their inception and have created a second adult 11v11 team to take part in the Cumberland County League.

The FA Charter Standard Club is Pirelli JFC.

Focusing on entry level participation, they provide opportunities for boys and girls and have a strong disability focus and are one of the very few clubs in the county to take ownership of disability football and produce a disability team.

James Reid, Cumberland FA football development officer, said: “We are extremely fortunate to have so many fantastic clubs and volunteers who help us strive towards providing better and more footballing opportunities for young players where they can learn to love the game”.

“We know how much work goes into football on a weekly basis and The FA Community Awards supported by McDonald’s allow us to say thank you to those who dedicate so much time to the game across the county”.

All winners in the McDonald's-sponsored awards will be presented with their trophies at the annual Cumberland FA dinner on Friday June 24.
