A teenage girl who suffers from a genetic blood disorder was rushed to hospital.
The girl fell ill while camping at Kepple Cove, a remote site near Ullswater, at about 10.30am yesterday.
She was treated at the scene before Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team stretchered her to a waiting Landrover. She was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
The stricken girl suffers from sickle cell anaemia, an inherited genetic disease which affects the red blood cells. It is a chronic condition which can cause painful attacks, shortness of breath and increases the risk of serious infection.
The two hour operation involved 14 members of the rescue team.
