First-time house buyers in Carlisle are among the youngest in the country, according to new research.

The average age of a person taking their first step onto the property ladder in the city is just 27 - seven years younger than people in parts of London.

The study, conducted by the Halifax, put Carlisle out on top alongside Torfaen in South Wales.

Chris Gowland, the company's mortgages director, said: "This is a reminder of how early aspiring home owners should start thinking about what they will need to get onto the property ladder and what options they should consider in order to take their first step."

Halifax said Government schemes - such as Help to Buy - and the “bank of mum and dad” are likely to have prevented a sharper rise in the average age of first-time buyers.
