Firefighters raced to the scene of a suspected building fire, after a member of the public reported smoke billowing from a Cumbrian church.
Two appliances from Whitehaven were sent to the Grade I-listed St James' Church, on the town's High Street, at about 7.45pm on Monday.
A spokesman for the station said that when they arrived they discovered that it was actually steam from the church's condenser boiler.
"We are treating it as a false alarm with good intent," he added.
