Plummeting temperatures have prompted forecasters to issue an ice warning for part of the county.
The Met Office's yellow warning comes into force at 5pm today, and is expected to last until 11am tomorrow.
It covers all of the north east of England, as well as the eastern edge of Cumbria.
A spokesman said: "Icy patches are likely to form on some untreated roads and pavements.
"Difficult driving conditions and slippery pavements are possible. Snow will be an additional hazard on the higher ground in Scotland and northern England."
