Carlisle's Old Town Hall has held its fair share of ceremonies during its 350 years in existence - and it can now add a wedding to that list.

For the first time ever, the prominent city centre building provided the venue for a wedding ceremony as Emma Armstrong and John Charters tied the knot on Tuesday.

In doing so, the couple became the first people to get married in the hall which dates back to 1669.

The hall's Assembly Rooms have just been refurbished showing off the venue's original wood panelling and splendid fireplaces.

It's previously been used as a court room and council chambers, but never for a wedding.

It can now seat up to 40 guests and bosses are planning on only hosting a handful of ceremonies each year in order to keep it exclusive.

Registrar Stephanie Griffiths and Bridget Fenton conducted the ceremony.

"It's a very special occasion for John and Emma being the very first happy couple to be married in this wonderful building," Stephanie told the guests in attendance.

"It means a great deal to them that you here, family and friends, are here to witness this wedding."

Emma, 39, from Carlisle, walked down the aisle to the Star Wars theme song Imperial March and the ceremony went down without a hitch.

Speaking afterwards, John, 37, said: "It's mental, I'm still nervous now."

Emma added: "My mum suggested this place and I didn't know they done weddings here. I came and had a look around and thought yeah, this is the place but I thought they'd done them before."

Laura Thompson, a tourism officer at the Carlisle Tourist Information Centre which is based in the town hall, said: "Hosting the first wedding here is a massive deal as far as we're concerned.

"Since the refurbishment it's such a lovely setting for these special days and being right in the city centre it has a unique view."
