George Osborne visited Richard Rose Central Academy in Carlisle today, to talk to students about the Northern Powerhouse.
He was shown around the school and met students, speaking to them about their hopes for the future.
He was joined by Carlisle Conservative MP John Stevenson as he visited the academy.
Around a dozen anti-austerity protesters were waiting at both the front and back entrances, hoping to plead their case to the former Chancellor.
There were members of both the Labour and Socialist Parties, as well as the leader of the RMT union for the north west, Craig Johnston in attendance.
Craig Johnston said: "If I get the opportunity today I want to welcome George Osborne to the 'Northern Poorhouse' that his austerity measures created.
"I want to ask him how his long-term economic plan is going and it's no wonder with his record, that John Stevenson is bringing him back to school."
Brent Kennedy, member of the Socialist Party, and also protesting said: "We've heard there's going to be two decades of falling living standards, and no one is more to blame for that than George Osborne.
"He introduced austerity, which is self-defeating."
George Osborne will also be at The Halston Hotel in Carlisle today, where he will give a speech about the Northern Powerhouse.
