Labour has won a Carlisle City Council by-election, with Anne Glendinning holding the Castle ward for the party.

The poll was held yesterday following the death of Ged Caig in May.

Labour took the victory with 398 votes.

Melissa Andrews, for the Conservatives, came second, securing 228 votes.

The total number of votes cast was 856. Turnout was 21.9 per cent.

Following the by-election, the city council has 52 Councillors, comprising 27 Labour councillors, 20 Conservative members, four independents and one Liberal Democrat.
