Neil and Jillian Coleman’s spacious home in High Hesket has four bedrooms and three toilets. Yet only the two of them live there – plus their beagle, Barney.

So it’s impossible for the three of them to use all the space they have.

The couple moved to Cumbria after retiring some 15 years ago. But they come from Warwickshire originally, Jill is 73 and Neil is 76, they have just celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, and they now feel the time is right to move back to their home county – and into a smaller place.

But they are sad to be leaving. It was a brand new house when the Colemans bought it. “We’d always had some holidays up here,” Jillian recalls.

“We came up to have a look and when we saw it, it was nearly built. We liked it straight away.”

She adds: “We shall miss it dreadfully. The people are very nice here – we’re going to miss them too.

“We’ve been very lucky to have had good neighbours. It’s a quiet area.

“But we are both ready for a change so we’ve decided to go back to where we were born.

“We’ve been here a long time and we’ve got used to the space, but it’s too big for us – we just need somewhere a bit smaller.”

The house would therefore be ideal for a family. It has a wide back garden, big enough for children to play in. High Hesket has a small Church of England primary school, judged outstanding by Ofsted inspectors at their last visit in 2014.

It also has a pub, the Salutation Inn, and a church, St Mary’s. Penrith is less than 10 miles away along the A6 and Jillian observes: “You are in Carlisle in minutes.”

The house still looks new, inside and out. Downstairs there is a living or dining room and a conservatory which opens out into the garden and is warm all year round, and is perhaps their favourite room.

“We basically live in there!” Jill says. “We do spend a lot of time in it.” Oil-fired central heating and double glazing help keep the whole house warm.

“We also have a decent-sized kitchen, which is big enough to have a table and chairs, and a utility room.”

One of the three loos is also on the ground floor.

Upstairs there are four good-sized bedrooms, one of which has its own en-suite shower room and toilet. And there is a separate bathroom.

The large garage joined to one side of the house has an up and over door, power sockets, a side window and a light – and is presently the home for the lathe and milling machines owned by Neil, a retired engineer. There is enough parking space at the front for two cars.

The house has security lights and gated entry to the back garden, which is well fenced and sheltered.
