Caroline and Mark Quinn have completely revamped and extended the semi-detached house in Stanwix, creating a modern, high-quality family home with high-end fixtures and fittings and bags of space.

Since launching their Woodgrange Developments company five years ago, the husband and wife team have 15 such projects under their belt.

Their business has an excellent pedigree, with Caroline a member of the family behind Cumbrian Properties and Lakes Cottage Holidays. Her vast knowledge of the local housing market comes from working as a valuer for the family firm for a number of years.

Their latest project is in the popular Whiteclosegate area of Brampton Road. The house, named Marlowe, which was empty when they bought it, had a traditional layout with two reception rooms, a small kitchen, three bedrooms and gardens.

Now it has a light and airy lounge, huge open-plan dining kitchen with integrated appliances and separate utility and downstairs shower room, four bedrooms and a new bathroom.

It has been fully refurbished, as well as extended, including new wiring, plumbing, plastering, windows, doors and oak flooring.

Caroline said: "We've had two extensions built, one on the back to extend the kitchen and create a large open-plan living space, and the other on the side of the house to create the new utility room and shower room on the ground floor and spacious family bathroom upstairs.

"The original kitchen was tiny and we've found that people want a big kitchen. When we renovate houses, we always pay a lot of attention to detail and design as that’s what sets us apart."

Mark added: "This kitchen is completely bespoke and we designed it ourselves. It has high-quality fittings, including a central island with hob, and quirky design features including remote-controlled changeable coloured lighting to create different moods."

Integrated appliances include a microwave, double oven, coffee maker, wine cooler, fridge-freezer and dishwasher, all set within neutral units with granite worktops and tiled splashbacks. An instant boiling hot tap does away with the need for a kettle.

The large dining area has a roof lantern window giving lots of light and bi-folding doors into the garden.

"It has the design, the quality and the finish that we think people want," said Mark. "We have good relationships with local suppliers and contractors and use them wherever possible. That’s important to us."

The back garden has been turfed and is now a low-maintenance family space with decking and patio areas, and the front garden has parking for several cars and a small flower border.

Caroline said: "The back garden previously had trees, hedges and bushes that were obscuring the view over the fields. We've put in a glass-panelled fence to make the most of the open views across the countryside."

The old first-floor bathroom is now a fourth bedroom and the original single bedroom at the front of the property has been extended into the roof space to create a double bedroom. The master bedroom, at the back of the house, has double doors in a bay window making the most of the views.

The new spacious bathroom in the side extension is fitted out in the up-to-date industrial style with high ceiling and window, double sinks, freestanding bath and marble tiles in the walk-in shower.

Mark said: "The renovation has turned out great and we're really pleased with it."

Caroline added: "It's about to go on the market and we've had lots of interest. We are now looking forward to starting our next project which is a detached house, also on Brampton Road, where we have some exciting plans."
