Inside Carlisle United’s squad are two current internationals: Bermudian Reggie Lambe and Canadian Kris Twardek.

Another of the Cumbrians’ January signings alongside Millwall loanee Twardek, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, has also earned 22 senior caps for Jamaica.

Blues boss Keith Curle, too, is an ex-England international defender. He won three caps for his country and featured in the 1992 European Championships during his playing career.

But the current crop are not the first internationals to turn out for Carlisle.

Derek Asamoah (Ghana)

The striker had two spells with the Blues, originally joining the club in 2014 before he was released ahead of the start of the 2015/16 season.

But five months later, Asamoah was back at Brunton Park as he linked up with the Blues in October 2016 again, only to be released in January 2017 for a second time.

Asamoah’s most memorable moment in a Carlisle shirt came when he scored his side’s goal in their Capital One Cup tie with Liverpool in 2015. The Cumbrians pushed Liverpool all the way at Anfield in a heroic display before losing a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw.

He has won four caps for Ghana.

Pascal Chimbonda (France)

The experienced former Premier League defender joined United in October 2013.

Chimbonda was on the bench for France’s 2006 World Cup final defeat to Italy and won his only France cap in the same year against Denmark.

He played 26 times for Carlisle during the 2013/14 season, before being released at the end of the campaign.

Lee Miller (Scotland)

Miller signed a permanent deal with United in 2011 as he joined the club from Middlesbrough.

But the striker, who was capped three times for Scotland, was among the 10 players released after United’s relegation from League One at the end of the 2013/14 campaign.

He now plays north of the border for Scottish Championship team Livingston.

Graham Kavanagh (Republic of Ireland)

Midfielder Kavanagh first joined the Blues in 2008, initially on a loan basis.

In January 2009, he was then released by Sunderland and joined Carlisle on an 18-month contract as a player-coach.

Following the sacking of Greg Abbott, Kavanagh was then appointed United’s manager in 2013, before he was dismissed from his position a year later.

He played 16 times for his national side.

Prince Buaben (Ghana)

Another Ghanaian among the Cumbrians’ former players, a glowing reference from Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola helped convince then-boss Kavanagh to sign the two-cap international in 2013.

He lasted just one season with the Brunton Park outfit, though, and was also released at the end of the 2013/14 relegation season.

Buaben currently plays for Hearts.

Ian Harte (Republic of Ireland)

The goalscoring left-back made a real impact in his time at Brunton Park.

The Leeds United and Republic of Ireland legend was prolific in front of goal and earned a place in the PFA League One 2009/10 team of the year.

He left Carlisle for Reading for an undisclosed fee in 2010.

Lubo Michalik (Slovakia)

Something of a fans’ favourite in his time with the club, Michalik joined Carlisle on loan before completing a full-time switch in 2011.

Having been capped prior to his move to Cumbria, Michalik also returned to the Slovakia fold while with the Brunton Park side, in total earning eight caps.

Anthony Griffith (Montserrat)

Having won two caps for minnows Montserrat prior to his move, midfielder Griffith joined Carlisle in 2015.

He went on to win two more caps for his country but didn’t make a real impression while with Carlisle.

Frank Simek (United States)

Abbott swooped to bring in five-cap international Simek to replace departing Richard Keogh in 2010.

The defender hoped his move to United would help to reignite his international career but, having made more than 100 appearances for the Blues, Simek returned to America after his release in 2013.

Peter Murphy (Republic of Ireland)

United’s record outfield appearance-maker, Murphy spent more than a decade with the club.

His goal in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final won Carlisle the competition in 2011.

Murphy is now player-manager of Scottish League Two team Annan Athletic.

His one cap for the Republic of Ireland came in a friendly against Bolivia.

Nahki Wells (Bermuda)

Now a Championship striker, Wells signed a deal with Carlisle in 2010 following a successful trial.

The Bermudian did not make much of an impact in his spell in Cumbria, but has gone on to much bigger things.

He joined Burnley from Premier League side Huddersfield in August in a £5m deal.

Dean Walling (Saint Kitts and Nevis)

Walling was another favourite at Carlisle.

He made 236 appearances during his time at United and also was capped by St Kitts and Nevis twice.

Jean-Claude Pagal (Cameroon)

A Cameroon World Cup star, Jean-Claude Pagal’s Carlisle career in 1998 was brief, but memorable.

With his solitary outing in a United shirt over in 67 minutes, it was later revealed Pagal had peed on the pitch during a Blues away clash at Gillingham!

Eric Welsh (Northern Ireland)

Playing for Northern Ireland four times in 1966/67, Welsh is believed to be the first man to have played international football while with the Cumbrian club.
